Short answer: No.
A cold will manifest itself with a cough and sore throat around 2 - 5 days after you were infected. It is very likely that you have been walking around whilst infected for several days with no idea it had happened.
Once symptoms show, the cold will last for around one week but may well last longer.
Remember that coughing, sneezing and general congestion are NOT parts of the disease. They are your body fighting the disease.
Things you can do to help your situation are limited. There is NO cure for the common cold. The best you can do is keep hydrated and avoid exertion.
DON'T drink alcohol. Although the whisky may have worked to kill the infection when it first entered your throat, it won't help now. It will probably even make you worse as it will dehydrate you and weaken your defenses. Coffee, tea and soft drinks will also dehydrate you and cause a similar effect.
Drink lots of water, gargle with warm salt water, use cough drops / throat spray / nasal spray if you want but it will only make you feel a bit better, it won't cure you in any way. Paraceptamol will also help to lessen the pain. Ibuprofen will also lessen the pain and may reduce any swelling.
If you develop a severe cough, your GP may prescribe you a low dosage of codeine as a cough suppressant but the efficacy of this is disputed by doctors.
No antibiotics or antiviral drug will ever work against a cold. Don't ask your doctor for these. Unless you're in an at risk group or the cold persists for more than a week or so it's probably not worth going to your doctor at all as they'll only tell you the things I just said.
Vitamin C, Zinc and chicken soup are three more commonly believed 'cures' for the common cold but as yet there is no hard evidence for any of them.

They say a cold has to run it's course but i believe you can not only alleviate symptoms but shorten the length of infection time. Plenty of sleep, vitamin c and preferably with acerola added. Drink tisanes of thyme, a great disinfectant for respiratory problems, with honey and fresh lemon added. dietwise, steer away from anything sugary, apart from honey in the tisane, as a cold is fed on sugar, drink plenty of fluids, eat lots of food and keep away from too much greasy foods, especially meat. You can try taking echinacea with propolis also. Do some inhalations with a homeopathic product, they will help with the snuffles. I once had a blinder of a cold, so I boiled up some milk with several cloves of garlic in it, fished out the garlic and drank the milk still hot. The next morning my cold had practically vanished. The problem was, I almost gassed every other member of the family, especially one of my sisters as I was sharing her bedroom.
Answer:
Nothing cures it, I have had it since Saturday, my eyes are streaming, my nose running and sniffing all day and I am at work. The Vics Inhaler is helping a little.
Answer:
A clove of garlic, loads of water and vit c. Have a duvet day! You just make a list and get someone else to pack for you!
Answer:
Chicken soup (freshly made) contains natural antibiotics which can help the body to heal from infection (viral or bacterial), but I'm afraid that you'll just have to wait until your body produces the white cells to fight the infection.
You can help the symptoms with the use of regular paracetamol and a decongestant from the chemists.
