I’m 20 years old and have been diagnosed with Manic Bipolar Disorder since before I can remember. About a year ago I started smoking pot and my freak outs have been less and less. Unlike most stoners I still have the energy to go about my daily life as if I wasn’t high. When I do smoke it helps me to stay calm and see the situation in a different way. It also helps with my anxiety. I do take lithium but no medication I’ve ever taken has done the job. If it helps one thing it makes another worse. So my main question is …..Would it be a good thing to speak to my doctor about so I have the ability to stop doing it illeagally?
Answer:
depends what say you live in. if your say has voted to legalize medicinal marijuana (like we did in michigan yay) you can speak to your dr. about it.
i truly believe that it helps you. marijuana is the best thing out there for many disorders. how it's illegal, when alcohol is legal is beyond me. it's a plant that needs to go through no processing to get the desired effect, unlike any other substance in the universe that we can take.
i'm glad you found something that helps your issues. hopefully your dr. can do something it would be a shame for you to get into trouble over something that helps you.
Answer:
Marijuana and bipolar disorder is an unmitigated disaster. It severely aggravates the long term prognosis of the disease, and appears to make people apt to much more severe and frequent manias.
To be honest, 'freak outs' don't sound like bipolar disorder, and aren't characteristic of it at all. That's more in line with a panic disorder.
Answer:
It would be superior to talk to the doctor about medicines he has the ability to prescribe to you. But yea, One of the rules of illegalizing pot was to prove it had no medicinal uses first. They apparently didn’t do that. Since It is used for cancer patients as well.
Answer:
if you think smoking pot works for you, that's great.
Look, i'm not against pot at all by the way
the commonly held medical view on pot is that it promotes psychotic behaviour
there is quite a bit of evidence to this effect
the bad thing for you is you started smoking it a year ago you state, and you say you've just been diagnosed with bipolar
so, if you tell the doctor about it, he/she is more than prone to attribute the onset of bipolar to some extent to the use of pot.
That's the most likely thing
some clinicians may approve of it as a recreational drug and to that end a relaxant.
So pot will rest you and slow down the freak outs
but it will also be apt to be credited with making it worse
chances of getting a physician to approve of this is well, i dunno, i couldn't rule it out, but i just wouldn't expect it to happen
it might be worth a try, then you can have the chance to get smoking pot, written on your medical file, and even the giant leap that it caused your bipolar, and that might not help if you want to apply for jobs and stuff
i don't know what country you're in, but here in australia, the filth can get access to your medical records and you never know
anyway, i'd be less inclined to advertise the fact, or do so only if you want to present as having problems and say you've been smoking some with friends sometimes, or yes i've tried it, all my mates were
then you can be a victim nearly
All that being stated, wijjymana can relax and give euphoria which can help with general mood and help the bipolar in that regard
but at the same time
it has the potential to, certainly over a period of time, make the condition worse
then again, like i say, i know bipolars that smoke it and it doesn't have too many bad effects (apart from the smoke and the lungs)
but there are times myself, when the paranoia can set in, and i dunno, it can string you out a bit
use it with moderation or try to monitor the effects to keep an eye on how you're traveling in case it does cause problems
Like you state, less freak outs
but i wonder what degree of freak outs you're having and you mean full psychotic episodes?
If you've been having those and they're reduced by pot, all well and good
but a psychotic episode will often be hospitalized until stable, the way you speak about it in degrees, doesn't sound like a full take, but maybe you do, i don't know
i know what you mean about the meds, all the side effects and everything
anything can appear superior than them
then i have an idea, maybe if you want to broach the subject, you could ask the physician state, your friends have been smoking pot and you're not sure if that would be a bad thing for you to try and you're worried but they're pressuring you?
Then if he get's all no way hose about it, at least you can just thank him and maybe express a bit of disappointment that you'll be alienated
and left out with your friends, it might make it seem more credible and get a sympathy card
good luck
