Gastrointestinal Bleeding:
hematochezia- refers to passing whole clots/bright blood per rectum. This typically indicates a lower source for the bleeding (ie hemorrhoids are most common reason)
melena- refers to dark, black tarry stools (with blood in them). this indicates a higher source of gastrointestinal bleeding (ie stomach ulcers etc)
