I'm about to get one. What is it? I heard it's painful. How painful? How do they do it? Do you get anesthetic?

Answer:
If you have had a filling on a tooth then just think of it as a filling that takes a long time . You will be numb so you wont feel what they are doing but the dentist will take some tiny little instuments and clean out the nerve chamber of the tooth and disinfect it and after it is clean and dry inside the canal he will place a filling material back in the canal where the nerve chamber used to be now your tooth wont have a blood supply to it anymore so it is more likely to break you should definately follow your root canal up with a crown especially if it a front tooth without a blood supply teeth become brittle and are more likely to break and front teeth are thin anyway im sure if you ask your dentist he would be happy to exsplain the procedure before you start so youll know exactly what to exspect . It wont be nearly as bad as you can believe it will be before youve actually done it .

Answer:
a root canal is a cavity filling, only they extract the root because it has been damaged and replace it with some kind of filler. its like a cavity only the cavity went down to the root, so they have to work on the root as well. its not painful they give you anesthetic or numb it when they are doing the procedure.

Answer:
It is like poking a nail into your gums. You will want to go to the dentist right away.

They numb your jaw and drill out the abcessed area. I ended up having periodontal surgery for my whole mouth.

Answer:
Honestly, they don't hurt at all. They numb you up and you don't feel it. The worst part is it takes forever. My procedure lasted 2 hours but it's not painful. They gave me a presciption for pain medication but I never needed it. Don't worry, you'll do great!!

Answer:
it won't hurt cuz they give u anethsia..so the only pain u feel will be off the injection u get..make sure u eat something. your mouth and nose will feel as if they weigh 1 ton after getting the anathesia also after it wears off you will feel some pain but the doctor will give you some serious painkillers which if u dont take u will expererience a lot of pain

Answer:
the procedure itself isn't that painful since ur gums and the surrounding area of the tooth that u are getting the work done will be numb, but when they inject ur gums to get them num…thats painfull.

Answer:
I have had two root canals, and both where completly different. I have a low tolerance for pain, so it did hurt for me to get it done. If you have a low tolerance, "TELL YOUR DENTIST". They will up the anesthetic for you. The first time, is just like what Coolmomo said, but add a metal mouth brace thing that keeps your mouth open that looks like a torcher device. The second time, they drilled and then put a agent on the roots, which kills the roots and send you home. It takes some time to kill the roots, but you won't feel any pain. Then later they will drill and basicaly wash out the roots. A way better process then the first. All in all, root canals are not fun, just tell your dentist if you feel any pain, even a little and they will fix it.

Good Luck!

Answer:
Root canals are not good if I was you I would have the tooth pulled they lead to many other problems and are not very healthy for your body. I had root canal and it has totally messed with my nerves and I have been in pain for three years.
