I mean the snap-your-neck kind of hanging, not the strange-to-death type of hanging.

I've heard that decapitation is not an instant death because the human head supposedly stays alive a few seconds longer (which must make it a horrible death). So, is hanging really an instant thing?

Answer:
It takes roughly .3 seconds to die if hung correctly and 'humanely'.
It depends what vertebrae were damaged, and to what extent the spinal chord was damaged.

Until 1872 in England, they didn't much care for the merciful hanging- luckily for those who were hung William Marwood figured out the ideal height to do it at, and where to position the rope on the neck to make it more likely for the death to be swift. Before then they didn't have a long drop and had short drops which led to just strangulation most of the time.

If the spinal chord is ripped or severely hurt, then there’s a sudden loss in blood pressure and nerves which causes nearly immediate death (within .2 or .3 seconds)- your whole system would automatically die. Since the 1870's, this is what happens to most people who are hung.

Basically, if your neck was snapped by the rope, then the rope will have caused the above to happen. There is a medical possiblity, I suppose, for that to be different though:

If the spinal chord is damaged but not just snapped in half then how long it takes to die depends on under which vertebrae the damage occurred.
If the chord is injured above the 5th vertebrae, your breathing fuctions are prone to be drastically impaired- making you die of asphyxiation.
If below the 6th vertrae, though, you’re can be paralyzed, but still able to breath- thus the brain stays alive longer.
I’m not sure if these scenarios are possible, though, as if the neck is snapped, then spinal shock most surely will follow.

Decapitation is much the same- where usually people die instantly because of spinal shock and sudden BP drop which makes you instantly dead.
But depending on where the damage to the neck took place, there’s a chance of longer life, for at least your brain, that’s. If, state, the head were hung upside down immediaely after decapitation, then blood pressure wouldn't drop as quickly, so the brain could be alive for about, I don't know, 12 seconds?

As long as there is blood being pumped in the brain, it can live- but the second your BP drops all the way, the brain has very tiny life in it- and severe damage to the spine like that will usually cause the BP to drop.

Answer:
The hangman's knot is designed to create an instant fracture of the 2nd cervical vertebra (C2) - this is called a “hangman's fracture”. When C2 fractures in the manner of a hangman's fracture, the spinal cord is immediately severed. A severed spinal cord at the level of C2 totally blocks nerve impulses from the phrenic nerve (from C3, C4 and C5) that control breathing. Thus, breathing stops instantaneously. Loss of consciousness, followed by brain death is nearly immediate - no more than a few seconds - which might be a relatively “long time” for the victim.

Ideal wishes.

Answer:
Yes it is an instant death, the top bones connecting the bottom part of your skull and like end of the spine towards your head is snapped (that bone is broken), you die automatically, thats like why the drop you and put the rope around your neck in that area
and yea supossodvly (haha cant spell) that your hearing and eyesight still work, but you’re dead

Answer:
it depends if u get hung and ur neck is too strong it wont break and then u just kinda dangle until u choke urself out. Easiest way would be to jump off of something high and angle ur head to the ground. It would be a hell of a ride too envision the adrenaline and u can even pretend ur base jumping but u dont have a parachute.

or just use a damn gun lol

Answer:
No in many cases it isn’t. that’s the thing just because you break your neck doesn't mean you will die. but just saying that if you do break your neck and live you will soon suffocate

Answer:
If not done right it can be a really horrible way to die by slowly suficating. I hope you aren't asking this because you are thinking about trying it.

Answer:
Most likely not, even if you DO snap your neck, it isn’t immediate. And either way, (Mudkipz awesome'd the rest of this answer.)

Answer:
…OH, NOO….AFTER THAT……YOU WILL GET A …'BIRTHDAY PARTY'….HA,HA,HA,HA….

Answer:
Really? Death isn’t the answer, it wont solve anything. Thats a lie from the pit of hell.

Answer:
Only when it's done right.

Answer:
No
