My mother just informed me that my blood type is O negative and that it is very rare. She also told me that doctors always want O negative, so I'd like to donate blood. I herd a rumor that you have to be 17.

BTW, in case you have to know-I like in Ontario, Canada

Answer:
In Canada, you may donate blood if you’re older than 17 years old and younger than 71. Be at least 110 lbs (50kg) and have had something to eat or drink on the day of your donation. Must be in good overall health and meet hemoglobin (iron) stipulations (test done immediately prior to donation). Can not have any sicknesses at time of donation and will be asked several screening questions. You might not donate more frequent than ever 56 days.

On a side note: Type O- is the most resourceful blood type. It can be given to anybody needing blood products. I greatly urge you to begin donations as soon as legally able to since blood and blood products have a very short timeframe in which they may be used and blood banks constantly need to be replenished.

Answer:
I know in the states that it is 16 but im not 100% sure about Canada. You have to make sure that you weigh atleast 110 lbs and you can’t have gotten any tattoos or piercings within the past year, participated in homosexual sex, used IV drugs, or received a blood donation within the past year. So as long as you meet all that criteria you should be good.

Answer:
Unfortunately, in Canada you do have to be 17. Some says in the US let you donate blood at 16 (in case you’re near the border)

By the way, if you’re a women who is type O negative, that could cause some pregnancy problems. Not something you have to worry about now, and the problem is really easy for a physician to fix, but just a “heads up”.

Answer:
Minimum standards for blood donation are:
Age 17
Weight (min) 110 lbs
In generally good health without any known medical condition and have not been ill in at least 72 hours.
Generally you can’t give blood if you have used IV drugs, had unprotected sex with someone from central africa, or lived or visited Western Europe, Africa, or the Middle East.
You can donate approximately each 2 months.

Answer:
In Canada I believe it is 15 or 16 with parental consent. If not most likely it would be 18.
