mentally ill might only be mild depression through to schizophrenia whereas insane generally describes someone who has reached a point where they have lost control of reasonable behaviour and are usually a danger to themselves or somebody else , at this point they would nearly certainly be sectioned under mental health act.

The question is. can one know they’re truly mad? Yes…by definition it is repeating the same thing over and over..something we humans do very often.

You can state a person that’s mentally ill has a high likely hood of becoming superior or ill - thus if they turned ill leading to insanity.
