Wearing your contact lenses while sleeping is very unhealthy for your eyes for several reasons. First, a portion of the oxygen supply that keeps your corneas healthy comes from your tear film and the air you are exposed to while your eyes are open when you’re awake. When you sleep, while wearing contact lenses, the oxygen level drops to very low levels since your eyelids are shut and any oxygen that gets past your eyelids is further blocked by the contact lenses. Oxygen deprivation might also result in pannus or abnormal blood vessel ingrowth at the edges of your corneas. Second, sleeping in your contact lenses greatly increases your risk for corneal infections (ulcers) that can cause permanent scarring of your cornea with vision loss.
