Won't speak for each link listed, but according to Laurel Hill Farm's (provider of horses to the set) blog, the horse that Viggo Mortensen rides in Appaloosa is “Cash,” a 17-hand Quarter Horse stallion trained by Rex Peterson. “Cash was extremely well behaved considering this is his first experience on the set with all kinds of crazy things going on around him.”

In the 1966 version, a thoroughbred race horse named Rojo was used and was actually painted black for the motion picture.

Answer:
The horses in the motion picture look like they have Arabian heads, but stocky, Quarter Horse-ish bodies.
They are probably Quarter Horses, or they could be Quarter Horse crosses.
The reason I state that is because QH's are most commonly used in movies that don't call for a specific breed because of their versatility. They’re also simple to ride and are usually well-mannered. This is good for actors/actresses that can't ride a horse, and have to learn how to for the motion picture. :)
This doesn't go for every movie, though. I think they are QH's or QH crosses.
Hope I helped :)

Answer:
In the '66 movie”The Appaloosa” (Marlon Brando, John Saxon, Anjanette Comer) COJO ROJO, ApHC #10535 (foaled on February 2, 1960) was the Appaloosa, NOT a TB. His name means “Red Cripple” or “Lame Red”.
“Appaloosa” is the name of the town and is no relation to, nor re-make of,”The Appaloosa”

Check the plumbing of horse in pic #3. Stallion? I suspect more than one horse played the part because of the variances of leg and facial markings.

Most of the movie horses come from the “ND Corral”. ( NonDescript)

Answer:
Most of them look like Quarter Horses. In the 2nd and 3rd pictures, thats a mule thats carrying the bags. So stereotypical, pack mule.. It actually takes over more of the horse characteristics, so its probably a Hinny instead of a mule. Basically the same.

Its odd that in the movie Appaloosa, i dont see any appaloosas.. [:

Answer:
Quarter horses, you see a lot of western movies with quarter horses in them,
one was a mule though.

Answer:
