Settle an argument please. My uncle is convinced that his pet goldie sees him come into the room and swims towards him when he approaches the bowl etc. I disagree. I think that they just have the general intelligence required to eat and swim.
Answer:
I think goldfish are very intelligent. They definitely recognize the person who feeds them. Every time I walk up to their tank, no matter where my goldfish are, they swim up to the front of the tank and look at me as if to say hello and swim to the surface hoping for food. Everytime I vacuum their gravel, they swim up and flip my hand with their tail fins or try to nibble on it or use it as a plaything by swimming circles around it. The fact that they do this rather than follow the primal instinct of hiding or swimming away from me recommends that they recognize me as a non-threatening being, which most likely occurs because they recognize me.
Also, each of my goldfish has a distinct personality and set of preferences regarding food and space in the aquarium. My black moor is very, very friendly, likes flake food, likes to swim near the bottom of the tank so he can dig around in gravel, and usually sleeps in the front right corner of the aquarium. My ryukin is a bit more timid (around me and guests), prefers to eat tubifex worms, likes to swim near the top of the water and squeeze through tight spaces, and prefers sleeping in the back right corner of the aquarium. So the fact that they maintain these patterns of behavior and preferences advocates a certain level of intelligence.
There are also scientific studies about goldfish intelligence.
This one suggests that goldfish have a memory of up to three months and that they can be trained and taught to follow a routine. Like Pavlov's dogs, they can be conditioned to learn and remember specific times of the day when pressing a lever will give them food.

So yes, I think goldfish are intelligent beings. Plus they're super adorable!
Answer:
i definetally disagree with you. my goldfish has a mind of it's own. it gets angry with me if i don't clean the water on time, swimming away to the other side of the tank! it appears to be ahppy to see me in the morning and contently swims to the top of the tank when i show it the bright orange goldfish flake containter, ready to eat. the myth that goldfish have a 4 second memory is exactly that, a myth. it is completely untrue and it has been proven in many tests. it has been found they have a memory span of at least 4 months, and after that they still remember the things like where to find the food.
so, to answer your question, yes goldfish do have intelligence.
and to the person who states they keep swimming into the sides of the bowl- probably BECAUSE you are keeping it in a bowl. learn about your fish.

Answer:
I personally think that goldfish aren't very intelligent. Idk, maybe his fish has associated him with food. Maybe he's like a proud bird owner putting words in his pet's mouth. I had four goldfish that all killed themselves within three days by swimming into the side of their bowls, so maybe I'm biased.
Answer:
I'm not sure if they have intelligence, but of course they have a brain…
There are tests which have been done, like tapping the lid to the top of the tank and then feeding them after. Then, after a while, every time you tap they'll come to the surface looking for food.
They probably know that if your uncle approaches they know food is coming or think it is. Its just what they associate with food.
But thats all i know.

Answer:
They’ve a 30 second memory span. And it's not unusual, my mom had a beta fish that did the same thing. Now if the fing thing had any intelligence it wouldn’t have tried that crap when my cat Reala decided to explore the kitchen table that day.
(-.-) ..|.. Fish. Cats pWntar them. ^_^
