he has always done this. we even got him neutered. any answers?

Answer:
Don't get rid of him - it can be fixed, it just takes some work and consistency! I’ve a dog that I'm currently working on housebreaking - he’ll ask to go out to pee, but not to poop - still working on that one!

A few things that could help or to check into:

1) Medical: Make sure there isn't a medical issue, although it doesn't sound like there'd be one if he's always done this and hasn't just started suddenly.

2) Scent: If he peed in the home before, even a housebroken dog will smell that and it can urge them to go or mark it (neutered or not). Nature's Miracle sprays work wonders - try to remember or find where he pees most and spray it on there. If he went on carpet, you might need to lift it up to get to the pad under there where the scent will remain. If you spray immediately that won't happen though.

3) Crate Training:

If he doesn't have a crate, you can try to crate train him. Even adult dogs take to a crate. There is soo much to say about this, but essentially it becomes like a den for them and dogs don't like to go where they sleep. It has to be the right size otherwise if it's too huge, he'll just go in a corner and sleep on the other side of it. Basically, if you can't watch him, you put him in the crate. Of course you can't overdo that…but if making dinner or out of the house, it can be helpful. The first few days of training in it he will cry probably and bark and whine - you’ve to ignore it and he'll settle down. I had a nightmare dog that took 4 days and half hour of whining before settling - now he adores the crate and goes to it to nap, so it does work.

Try gradually, giving treats and feeding him in it - then moving to doing that while closing the door and when he's quiet, immediately open it …and work your way up.

4) ReTraining: When you see him go, rush him outside. Don't hit him or anything or freak out, but just gently rush up and say no..interuppt him and take him out and then give him a treat (something that he really likes but only gets when he goes outside) each time.

5) Control: It might just be that he's not let out enough - take him out after exercise/playing, a half hour after eating/drinking, after a nap or if it's been a while since he's gone. Also, if you feed him at specific times rather than leaving the food out, you can start to guess around what time he'll need to go.

6) Stress/Attention: Sometimes dogs do this to get attention or because they’re stressed out. If something recently changed in your routine or he’s not getting as much exercise/attention as usual, that might cause it.

7) Small Breed: Small breed dogs can be harder to housetrain - houses are much bigger places to them and it's easy to find a little area to go that’s far away from the rest of their living space. They also can't hold it as long as some dogs.

It's hard to state since we don't know exactly your situation - if you’ve a yard that he goes out into, or if you only leash walk him, how long he's alone during the day, when he goes.

If it helps, try to figure out when he goes to the lavatory. It can be a lot of work, but a few months of that and he should have it down and you can rest and leave without coming home to any “presents” :S

Also - dogs can't associate reward/punishment with something unless it JUST happened, which is why it's important to reward him immediately when he goes where you want and interuppt him immediately when he goes where you don't want!

Hope that helps. A trainer/vet/local pet shop might have some advice too! If you have to work all day, it might be a good idea to try doggie daycare or have a friend/dog sitter come in to walk him and take him out too.

Answer:
The best thing that you can do is to set up a schedule. If you take your dog on about three 5-10 minute walks a day at the same time each day, he will look forward to going on the walks and will try to hold in pee to mark his territory outside. If you simply let your dog out onto a backyard, it's not enough. Dogs like to go new places. If you don't set up a schedule, the dog becomes unsure of whether you'll really take him on a walk or not, and simply decides to pee inside.

If you find pee, don’t punish your dog, because he probably already forgot that he did it and will only get confused if you punish him. Instead, try to catch him in the act. A confident hissing sound should follow, and then the punishment (nothing too bad).

If this doesn't work, you should consider professional training.

Answer:
mabey something has recently happened that is stressing her out? Try to be consistant, mabey shes not getting out often enough, if you can, provide a doggy door. Get carpet deoderizer specifically for getting rid of the smell of urine and spray it there whenever your dog urinates in the house. Try and catch her and punish her for it, then put her outside.

good luck!

Answer:
when my dog was a puppy i would take him regularly outside to pee even if he didn't need to, so now he is so used to peeing outside that he doesn't want to pee inside at all, so you could try to keep taking him out? or there may be products to spray on your carpet to repel them from peeing on it, i know they don't like the smell of lemon freshener?!?

Answer:
Honestly I don't even know this answer!! My tiny dachshund does the same thing! Possibly may try taking him out more…I've had to begin doing that. Or leave him puppy pads out so he doesn't use the potty on your carpet or floors. Also, the smell of past pee still attracts them even if you cannot see it. The smell is still there.

Answer:
To late! He rules the peeing. Pound! Your house smell isn’t worth keeping this untrained dog. Trust me..I've had a few and they're not here now. Problem is, I still have the smell and can't afford to change the carpet and its pad! I'm spending lots of money on carpet fresheners though!

Answer:
You can try a belly band to control it. I've never personally used one but a lot of people do.

Answer:
will he use puppy pads? if so let him go on it then move it closer to the door after a little while move it closer again til it is outside
