I've had a Shih Tzu that I've had her whole life, and was there from the day she was born. She's never had any bad grooming experiences because every time I take her to be groomed, I'm following the groomer everywhere. (I work with her, it's PetSmart)
She's a Shih Tzu, so she's constantly needing to be groomed, around her eyes is a problem. She looks like this constantly —

Right now, it's a bit worse than that!
She will pull, cry, and jerk! I try anything I can from covering up her eyes, to clipping while she's asleep !! Lol.
How can I make her deal with it? She needs to comprehend that she's a Shih Tzu and needs to be groomed everyday, and her eyes trimmed at least every 2 weeks….

Sometimes it is necessary to force the issue, you’ve a job to do & you are not going to allow her to halt you from doing it. One dog I used to groom never liked her face trimed. She didn't like the clippers or scissors. The owner really wanted her to have a clean face so the owner & I wrapped the dog in a towel with her feet held tight to her body so she can't escape the towel. The owner would hold the dog while I did the best I could do at shaving her face. Then follow up with sneaky scissor clip here & there. Her face never looked good but I did the best I could.
On a Shih Tzu there’s chin hair which provides a good hand full of hair to hang on to while you clip the face. Some dogs fight the face thing to the inth degree. Each inch of the way. But the face needs to be done & you’ve to find a way to do it & not traumatize the dog too much. The quicker it is done the quicker it is over.

Hey, I’ve a Shih Tzu aswell whose eyes constantly need clipping! Have you tried getting somebody to hold a treat in front of her so she’s concentrated on something else? It can be very hard as they are soo jumpy! Maybe take her out for a long run and really wear her out so much so she just has to slump on her bed. That sometimes works for mine! Good luck. Finola

I would talk to the trainer at petsmart to see what they would suggest to help your dog get used to being groomed around the eyes.
Good luck,

If she gets eye goo, just pick it out every few days. I’ve 2 bichon shih tzu crosses and thats what my vet stated. I have never had major problems with eye gunk.

Do a search on youtube for the video by canines in action called tuckers nail trim to learn about how a dog can learn to feel better about being handled.

First of all, any good groomer will tell you that you should not grant your dog to see you while they are being groomed. It gets them too excited and they can't stay still. I would suggest you take your dog to a better groomer. My shih tzu doesn't let me near her eyes either, but the professional groomer seems to have no trouble.
