I have a young male kitten about 4 to 5 months old. (Sorry not sure of exact age as he adopted us, and not the other way around). Our neighbours have a 10 week old female kitten and have been told that the presence of our male could bring her into heat even at her age. Is this true???

Answer:
Hi,

For crying out loud your neighbor is crazy. Cats don't go into heat until they’re 5 -6 months old and in some cases even older. The mere presence of a male cat has nothing to do with it, it is a hormonal reaction within the cats body. Thats like saying being around a man can make a human female ovulate. lol. Once the kitten has sexually matured (6-8 months old) she will go into heat, the heat will last for 15-22 days if she is not mated, if she is mated it can be as short as four days. If she is not impregnated she’ll likely go into heat every four weeks for the rest of her life or until she is spayed. (Dogs are different, they only have 3 heats a year around).

Please neuter your little guy and lets hope your neighbor has her spayed.

Hope this helps

Blessings.

Answer:
Ten weeks old is way too young to come into call but a tiny bit older and it can happen in some breeds. You’re doing the right thing desexing your cat and you should recomend they do the same with theirs.

Also, if you want a vet to answer your questions you should make an appointment with one :)

Answer:
Your friends are uninformed. Your kitten is fine at 10 weeks. I'd be more worried about fighting and biting. A kitten who is two pounds in weight is big enough to be spayed or neutered, however. There's no harm in finding a good vet who can do a spay on a small kitty and get it done pre-emptively if you’re worried.

Answer:
No, it won't. Females can come into heat on their own, and as early as 4 months, but they don't need a male around to do it. Your neighbors are wrong.

Answer:
No, it's not possible because her organs have not matured anywhere near the stage where she can start going into heat yet.

Please have your cat fixed though.

Answer:
Most likely, yes. Get /yours/ spayed as soon as you can (next month) and it will be fine.

Answer:
